Mizuno Wave Mirage 3 Gladiator Netball Shoes - Shoot and Retouch

Fran and Josie, face-off against each other in their Wave Mirage 3 Gladiator Shoes by Mizuno

When it comes to shooting Netball shoes, Mizuno like to do things a little differently, if we aren’t photographing netball shoes on blocks of ice then we have them on the moon or floating in mid-air over a grungy concrete urban background, so it was no real surprise when they commissioned us to make a Gladiator themed shoot for their latest shoe creation the Wave Mirage 3 Gladiator Netball shoe.

The Wave Mirage 3 Gladiator Netball Shoes

We approached the National Theatre Costume department for some authentic Gladiator Costumery and met up at Bracknell Sports Centre Athletics Track on a beautiful August day and set about photographing our Stars in the long jump pit. The long jump pit gave is the sandy base that would help us in the edit to create final image.

In amongst the giggles we manage to get a good selection of images that we could take back into the edit suite and create some visuals that even Russell Crowe would be proud of!

Enlisting the help of Wasps and England Netball Stars Josie Huckle and Fran Williams the idea was to have them facing off against each other in a traditional Roman Amphitheatre, with full Gladiator equipment

Royalty Free images from Shutterstock are amazing, a simple keyword into their search engine and we found these images in the gallery above and started to create our moody sunlit amphitheatre, we cut out the elements in photoshop and put together a bear-bones amphitheatre that looked realistic enough to put our Netball Players into.

The final Amphitheatre Image awaits our gladiators!

We cut out our players and added some extra colour grading and rim lighting to accentuate the light direction and finished off with adding shadows.

Starting with an in Situ shot we added some extra dust and artefacts to add to the realism.

But it doesn’t end there! There has to be an action shot or it just wouldn’t be complete so it was time for our players to face off against each other. The idea was to fight for the ball rather than using swords and lances as that would just be too much violence! So incorporating some extra background elements of real Gladiators and a lion, we stood the girls opposite and let them grapple for the ball. With extra colour grade and sand flying everywhere we created the final shot.
